I thought that I would be able to go to your St. Louis signing but I sadly do not think it is going to work out to drive up there.   9. Omg! I just found my NARS Velvet Lip Pencil again (in Sex Machine lol) and the reason I haven’t been able to wear it is because I don’t have a large enough sharpener, probably the reason I stopped wearing it (#lazy). Need to go out and get one!

    If you like King Arthur Flour, you should sooooooooo so so so SO find a way to make it to their Baking Education Center in Vermont. It’s unreal. My mom and I went up and spent half a day learning how to make baguettes. Like, really really good baguettes. I cannot recommend it enough. (And, uh, there’s a prettttty epic store there too :))

  12. Your talk about worrying is TOTALLY perfect timing. I’m about to finish my Master’s degree, and I am terrified about what’s next for me. Thank you both for your reassuring words.

    Also, my boyfriend and I ended up in a fancy department store recently and we were perusing the big KitchenAid stand mixer and the food processors. I definitely dropped some registry talk on him, and he freaked out a little. Oops!

  16. Great episode – and GREAT to meet you both Joy & Tracy in Seattle this evening! I highly doubt that you both remember me as there were so many you chatted to, but it was really a dream come true for me as I love both your blogs and the podcast and all your food as well!! I got a little star struck. Haha :)

    Lauren – I feel ya, girl. I think the silly thing about those feelings is that the nature of them, as you described them, make you feel so inferior to everyone else, and the irony is that everyone feels that way at least some of the time if not most of the time. If everyone feels that way, well we can’t all be inferior can we?

    Anyway because it sounds like your biggest hurdles are fear and getting started, I wanted to strongly recommend you pick up this book by Danielle Laporte: The Firestarter Sessions. She’s incredible (you can check out her blog at and buy her book on Amazon here: (I think it’s just pre-order right now but it’s coming out very soon). This woman will light a fire under you for a new business, a side project etc.

    I have a mildly successful blog. Somewhat decent traffic most days, I blog religiously with lots of photos and descriptions. What does it take to get myself out there more? How do I let people know that I have this blog that’s pretty cool? How did you guys get the additional traffic? Is it necessary to pay for blog ads, like food buzz?

    Good tip on the decorating bags! I’ve heard that the reusable ones do die after ~10 uses and they can get stained like you said. I tried piping macarons with a Wilton bag and tip today and it was so easy to throw the bag away afterwards. I can’t imagine having to try and clean that thing.

  26. Hi Joy & Tracy! I’m an avid blog follow of you both and a weekly podcast listener. This is going to sound super cyber stalkerish, but I swear I’m not a creeper… You two sounds just like my friends and I, and sometimes if I talk about your podcast to another person, I speak about you as though you are really my friend. A real life friend that doesn’t even know who I am… HA! I’ll be all, “Oh so what did you think of Tracys story today…blah, blah, blah.” And they know exactly who I’m talking about.

    Anywho, I actually had a question for you. I usually expect a podcast every Thursday, so I do my major cleaning then, blasting your voices over my stereo. It really does help get those floors and bathrooms cleaner, I swear. BUT…the few times there has not been a podcast, I’m starting to feel lost and unmotivated. Like there is no reason to clean. I might be exaggerating slightly, but seriously, it makes cleaning so much more enjoyable. Well, I was wondering what, if any, other podcasts do you guys listen to (asides from Homefries). I’d love to bookmark a few others so I don’t have to burn out on public radio everyday.

  27. I love Lauren’s idea of requesting a challenge. You two should post a weekly/monlthy challenge for everyone. I think it would help me and others get in the kitchen more often! I tend to throw things together more than follow a recipe but if I was challenged to do something, then I wouldn’t turn it down! :) just a thought!

  28. Joy! That NARS pencil reminds me of the thing I’ve been obsessed with in the past few months. It’s the Tarte matte lip stain – similar chubby lipliner style, but I have the hot pink and it’s surprisingly complimentary and not so fancy. It’s not creamy but it’s totally not drying.

    Anyway, yeah. Not a commercial. Just an obsession.
