It’s podcast time!  Let’s talk about St. Patrick’s Day re-stylings.  Let’s talk about how crazy our email situations are.  Let’s talk about hipster boys who buy sides of beef and intimidate us in the kitchen.  Also… let’s talk about Tracy humble bragging about body odor.

You know… the usual.

Tracy made Nigella’s Chocolate Guinness Cake .  Looks incredible!!

show_image_in_imgtag.php

I guess we need to talk about deodorant.  Tracy smells like a Koala Bear with Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant.  Joy… doesn’t smell like baby powder.  So, yea.

The book Tracy and I should have written:  The Little Black Book of Big Red Flags.

Get in that kitchen with that boy who buys hella meats!  Get your BRAISE on. Pulled Pork sandwiches are where it’s at! You no longer have to feel intimidated cooking meat in front of a dude.

Thank you so much for listening to this episode of the Joy the Baker Podcast!  Should you have any suggestions for natural beauty products or email inbox solutions, we’d love to read your comments below!

Big love to you!

I’m currently training for my first half marathon (chicago 6/23/13 here we go!) and I was already planning on having JoytheBaker and Shutterbean – just sang that – accompany me on the journey! It will be hard to stockpile the podcasts, but I’m excited! Great work ladies, love you!

I have my subscription on iTunes set to auto-download, and it’s not getting or recognizing this new episode. Anyone else having this problem, or have any ideas as to what I can do?

  • Jessica L. March 8, 2013 at 8:01 am

Gmail labels are my life! As soon as something comes into my inbox, I label it. It still keeps it in my inbox until I archive it, so things aren’t just put in a folder and lost.

Then, once I actually answer/deal with the email, I archive it. That way, it isn’t deleted, so I can always go back and look at it again if I need to. (I’m like Tracy, I have email deleting-induced anxiety.) You can even make subfolders and get craaazy organized. I like that. A lot.

I can attest to the fact that Nigella’s cake is AWESOME. SOOOooooooo good.

Jason’s Tea Tree Oil Deoderant or Arm and Hammer has a good natural one- but it’s hard to fine. They both work well and smell good. Better than Tom’s of Maine.

  • Elisabeth March 8, 2013 at 10:21 am

So, Joy, your place pretty much smells like a head shop lately thanks to the cat nip and the nag champa? ;)

  • Emily D. March 8, 2013 at 11:51 am

Apparently, there is also a movie called Red Flag. I noticed it when I went to watch something OnDemand the other day.

My favourite natural beauty products come from Consonant. Everything is organic and non-irritating for sensitive skin. Here is the link: http://www.consonantbody.com/

Hey there ladies! I am an accountant and mom (point being: I get a decent amount of emails) and I have learned the BEST email processing system EVER and it totally makes my life easier. I clear out my inbox every day PLUS I never have to worry about stuff falling thru the cracks or whatever. I use MS Outlook but then I use this add-in to drop and drag things into tasks straight from the email inbox. Anyway, not sure how much ADD y’all have but you can get the full info in the book “Take Back your Life” or get this add-in for a 30-day free trial on http://www.mcgheepro.com. It’s in the products under software. Hope it helps!

Tracy, I just bought Trader Joes crumpets for the first time yesterday! Amazeballs!

  • Anne March 8, 2013 at 3:57 pm

You guys, how weird is it that only yesterday I was just thinking about natural deodorant? So since I discovered years ago how bad the aluminum is and also since I realized my old deodorant was irritating my skin horribly, I changed over to this one I’ve been using from Origins (http://www.origins.com/product/3817/11952/Bath-Body/Daily-Essentials/Deodorants/Totally-Pure-Deodorant/Certified-Organic/index.tmpl). It seems to last forever and sprays on easily so I’m okay with the price. My only issue with it is that it has a slightly more mannish/earthy/herbal scent. I’m sorta okaaaaay with it, but now I’m even more curious to try the brand Tracy recommends so thanks! Oh, and on a sidenote Joy…I’ll admit it too, there are days I skip deodorant because I’m pretty much not going to sweat/see anyone.

Oh, and I almost forgot to add that the girl who wants to cook with her guy should try a cooking date where he cooks the meat and she cooks the sides- or however they want to divide it up for the night. That way they’re in the kitchen together, but she doesn’t have to worry because she’s making a recipe that she’s in charge of. Also, just embrace that he may have stuff to teach you in the kitchen. I bet he’d feel good about hearing that you’re interested in something he knows a lot about.

A natural option to freshen up your carpets is to go to the health food store and buy dried lavender blossoms. You can get a baggy for pretty cheap, and it lasts a long time. Take them out, rub them between your fingers as you fling them onto your carpet. If you’re feelin’ ambitious, roll your feet over them to smear in the lovely scent. Then vacuum it all, and the flowers also scent up your vacuum cleaner.

Also a nice touch for between the mattress & sheets for your guests. And easy. Trust me, I’m mega lazy. =)

    conquering your overflowing inbox: http://www.thenheathersaid.com/2013/01/16/conquer-your-overflowing-inbox/

[not that I have mastered this in any way, shape, or form. It's more of a I have one successful weekend of email domination and think my email habits have been changed forever only to feel buried six days later type of situation.]

  • biobabbler March 8, 2013 at 5:15 pm

Oh, and I’ve heard braggadocio used as a noun (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/braggadocio) but not as a verb. I think Tracy’s dad was verbing! Good for him. Good word. Fun to say, for sure. =)

  • Ellen March 9, 2013 at 1:55 am

Sooo, I never use deodorant and never have, except for maybe two weeks in eighth grade. Then I decided that since I didn’t really sweat why bother. Really, I don’t. My body is weird. I’ve heard since then that just as you can train your hair to need shampooing less often, that if you don’t start with deodorant you’ll not develop such a need for it.

  • Diane, A Broad March 9, 2013 at 8:01 am

For the girl who wanted a hair person in Santa Monica, I highly recommend Jade Design Studio. Irene is a champ and spends a lot of time figuring out exactly what you want before doing anything to your hair. Every single review on their Yelp page is five stars!

  • Andrea Merrigan March 9, 2013 at 9:19 am

Hi Joy and Tracy! I just have to say that I love your podcasts and I’m slowly catching up on the ones from the beginning, as I just started listening in November. Anyway, about natural deodorant. I use Tom’s but not a huge fan, as I usually have to apply it more then once a day to help with the odor. But I just recently heard about Primal Pit Paste, so I’m getting some the next time I need more deodorant! Here is a link: http://www.primalpitpaste.com/

  • Erin March 9, 2013 at 3:24 pm

Soapwalla Deoderant Cream is great! I can be really stinky and sweaty and it even works for me

  • Christine March 10, 2013 at 8:43 am

Email folders befuddle me. I agree with you guys – out of sight, out of mind! The only thing that I have found to work for me is to keep messages marked as unread until I have dealt with them. I have trouble reading email on my phone – I find I’m only half tuned in that way, so sometimes I keep things new till I can read the message in a quieter zone. I hate having that red circle appear on my Mail app, so it helps me stay motivated to keep after the ole’ inbox.

    Another great podcast, ladies! Thanks!

  • mackenzie March 10, 2013 at 2:28 pm

i’m going to attempt to make a beef + guinness pie (from the what katie ate cookbook!) for st patricks day for my man, even though i am a vegetarian and super apprehensive about making it + handling the beef. part of me just wants to go with nigella’s cake instead BUT… i would feel pretty empowered making this!
on a body odour note, nivea has a really nice aluminum free deodorant (i know it doesn’t keep you from sweating, but i feel way better about wearing it). it’s called pure + natural i think?

  • Aisha Moore March 10, 2013 at 9:18 pm

This podcast was super relevant to my life.

So last week I got rid of 25k emails using a combo of SaneBox and Mailstrom.co Mailstrom helps you indentify your mail in chunks. So you can go through the delete process much faster. SaneBox is really good at everyday management. You train it to filter your messages. I no longer have 5k+ unread messages.

The crystal deodorant works for me 90% of the time. I did have a bad experience with Oyin Handmade paste so stay away. It burned my skin. We use Maklin+Goetz body scrub. It makes me feel rich so I might try that deodorant.

For the woman who needs stuff for her apt. First, your apt might have glass shower doors or a rod so hold off. Also try Dollar Tree for things like shower curtain hooks so you have more for a cute shower curtain.

  • journeyfromself March 10, 2013 at 9:36 pm

Another suggestion for the natural air freshener: just light a match! I live in a house with two boys and we don’t have a fan in the bathroom. Solution: a box of matches! The sulfur in the match gets rid of the smell.

Tracy and Joy, You both need to use the Boomerang plugin. I was told about it 1.5 years ago, and it legitimately changed my email life. I believe it is available for most types of email service. It is free for free email services like gmail. Here’s how I keep my inbox organized with it:

    1. If an email does not need a response or action, I move it to a folder immediately. Get that sucker out of there.
    2. If an email needs a response or action within the day, I leave it in my inbox until I have accomplished the task or reply. As soon as that task is done, move that email to a folder (I keep all emails because every so often I need to look back to remember something).
    3. If an email needs a response or action, but not within 24 hours, I use boomerang to send it back to myself on the day that I plan to to the task. Boomerang then archives the email for me in a folder and then puts it back in my inbox at the time I have scheduled it to return. Sometimes I schedule it for 24 hours before someone asks for a response and sometimes I just schedule it for later in the week when I think I will have time to do it. Sometimes I boomerang non-crucial emails 3 times before I finally get it, but I try to never let more emails sit in my inbox than what I can see on my screen without scrolling!

  • Julia March 11, 2013 at 8:40 am

Thanks so much for answering my deodorant question (even though things got real). Looks like there are a lot of good options out there.

    • brandi March 12, 2013 at 11:25 am

i wanted to second tracy’s endorsement of the malin + goetz deodorant. both my husband and i have been using it for years (not the same stick though, to be clear). i am a moderate sweater, he is a moderate-to-severe sweater, and we’re both just a little stinky by the very end of the day. but, real talk, you’d have to get your nose right in my pit to smell anything. i have an anti-perspirant that i wear on those days where i CANNOT smell, but most days i am able to get by with just the deodorant. i’ve tried tom’s of maine and jason’s brands, but i’ve found malin + goetz to hold off the stank better than any other natural brand.

and joy, i definitely also forgo the deodorant on days that i’m staying at home all day.

  • Kelsey Nannemann (@KandidlyKelsey) March 11, 2013 at 2:20 pm

Woohoo! I finally caught up!!! That was one heck of a Joy the Baker podcast marathon I had. You ladies keep me entertained at work. Now I’ll only have one podcast a week (!!!) so I’ll have
to find a new super classy, unbelievably hysterical, extra informative, hippie-like duo to listen to. I’m not feeling too optimistic about the search.

I’m always amazed by Tracy’s ability to take it *there*. Email…. foreplay… whaaaat? Sometimes I’m barely keeping up. I always wondered if people could really be *that* bogged down by emails, but I guess it’s probably true! I’m currently in the position Tracy used to be in, just starting out in the blog world and wishing that people actually had something to email me about. Hopefully one day I’ll have your email problems too!

I like the idea of 5 sentence emails. That’s a good rule! It wouldn’t happen to apply to comments too, would it? Because I fail. Always.

  • Jen March 12, 2013 at 1:55 pm

    Great episode as always

Had to weigh in on the deodorant thing. I must wear and effective deodorant everyday or I will stink but I refuse to wear the commercial stuff anymore I tried Toms and most days it would be ok but some days I’d get stinky and I’m not ok with that.

Finally I decided to try a homemade recipe being totally skeptical but it worked. I mix 50% baking soda and 50% coconut oil. Sometimes a little less baking soda so it’s not too gritty. I put it in a jar and rub it on like a lotion. It works better than anything I’ve ever used. Ever.

Know you guys are into the coconut oil and I now use that to shave with. So I thought you might be interested.

  • Jo March 13, 2013 at 10:11 am

Another awesome episode, you ladies keep me sane on long drives home from school.
I use Trader Joe’s natural deodorant, not sticky like Tom’s, but they don’t always have it. When I can’t find the TJ’s brand, Herbal Clear also has an aluminum free, non-sticky, hypoallergenic deodorant.
I find it weird that mainstream men’s deodorant is oftentimes aluminum free, but women’s isn’t.

  • Sarah R March 13, 2013 at 2:07 pm

I just wanted to chime in with another vote for Arm & Hammer. I can’t wear aluminum deodorants/ antiperspirants because they make my skin freak out, but I sweat a lot when I work out. Arm & Hammer keeps me the freshest by far out of any of the non aluminum varieties that I’ve tried.

  • Lizzie March 15, 2013 at 6:25 pm

I’m late, but the deodorant I’ve used for years (aluminum free!) is from Etsy. Here’s the shop link:

    http://www.etsy.com/shop/FlameWorks/sold?ref=shopinfo_sales_leftnav

I always choose the scent Apothecary Vanilla but there are about a million options.

  • Meredith March 15, 2013 at 10:11 pm

I cannot believe that no one replied re hairstylists!
I work at a salon as a receptionist (for years now), and I totally support changing stylists if you don’t think that your current one is suiting you. It’s completely fine to stay with the same salon, and you don’t really need to say anything- when you boo your next appointment, you just say “I think I’d like to try someone else, can you recommend?” And hopefully the receptionist will ask what you liked about your old stylist and what you didn’t and then figure it out for you. Then you just come to your appointment, say “hi, nice to see you, how’s your daughter etc” to your old stylist and get down to business with your new one. You should also tell your stylist when you don’t like the way they styled your hair. “Next time, a lot less volume/ straighter at the ends.” Or find an assistant that you like and always ask them to blowdry your hair instead of your stylist (make sure to tip them both).
    Okay, enough.
    Love!

  • Erin March 19, 2013 at 8:41 pm

Joy and Tracy. Thanks for the best advice ever. #awesometherapy

  • Kohaku March 19, 2013 at 10:40 pm

I agree about the crystal not working hehe. I have used Arm & Hammer deodorant and it was pretty good. Lush has a few good ones and I heard Sephora sells one by Lavanila that’s awsome.

  • mariah March 28, 2013 at 4:27 am

LOL! OMG! The “hipster” man you described is totally almost an exact description of my fiance! He loves to cook. But he has this charcuterie cookbook… which has inspired him to do so many things. He has aspired to buy a bulk of meat. Yes, he has a beard! Yes, we have homemade mustard in the fridge! Things have been pickled, and cured (bacon has been made on several accounts). Kim chi has been produced in our apartment. He wears Old Spice! I had to share the bit with him- thought it was hilarious. I wouldn’t call him a hipster though…not in the slightest. Our hipsters are different out here in Michigan.

  • Jami Smith March 28, 2013 at 12:14 pm

Email Management for organizational Nutbags: I use Things (for mac) by Cultured Code. I copy emails that require me to do something, or require me to respond when I can’t immediately into a to do item in the Things app. You can set up projects and areas of responsibilities as well. It’s amazing… I can’t live without it. If you want more info about it, feel free to email me. :-)

  • annepercoco April 4, 2013 at 10:04 am

    Hi Friends,
I have read that aluminum deoderant is more dangerous if you apply it right after you shave. So if you must use it, just wait a bit!
    http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/antiperspirant.asp
    Stay safe ladies!
