Happy New Year, friends!  Welcome to another Joy the Baker Podcast.  Tracy and I are bringing in the new year with some talk on meditation and funfetti cakes. Also, Michael joins us for some talk on willpower!   We’re happy to be back!  We’re happy it’s 2014!  We’re ultra happy you’re here to listen!  Sorry… one of us might burst into tears.  We blame the full moon.

imagesFirst things first: meditation!  Tracy is working on getting some Headspace in 2014. Meditation to help her crazy brain! Michael is using Simply Being.  Clear that brain space.

We’re thankful that Michael is back on the podcast!  He came with some inspiration!

The Willpower Instinct:  the book and the google talk.  Tracy will soon have the willpower to watch the entire google talk.  It’s really interesting!

Also Super Better!

Hayden Pantierre didn’t tell Tom Ford she was wearing his dress to the Golden Globes and the Internet freaked out… which is WEIRD.  Chill.

Are you watching Vanderpump Rules and listening to Loveline?

Lastly, if you want to make your homemade cakes taste like boxed cake mix you could just make the box cake mix, or you could try this Sweet Dough Extract.

Thank you for joining us for another podcast!  You mean a lot to us!  Happy New Year!

  1. Love the Podcast! Thank you so much for helping me with the cake mix question. I am going to purchase the Sweet Dough Extract today. So it turns out my best friend’s mom ended up buying the Vanilla Celebration Cake from Susie Cakes (a bakery that has locations in both San Francisco and Los Angeles, https://store.susiecakes.com/vanilla-celebration-cake.html) and we LOVED it. It’s essentially like a hyper-butter Funfetti cake. Have you ever tried this particular cake? My goal is to recreate it, but I don’t have a recipe. Maybe one day you can try it and tell me what makes it so addictive.

I’m on a mission to try it!

      • Yay – thank you so much! I hope you like it.

        • Tracy – Have you tried the cake yet? I am going to spend Labor Day weekend with my friend testing various recipes and I would love to get your thoughts before then! HOMEWORK – go try that cake! 😉

I DID!!! I had it in the winter. It’s really good but a little too sweet for my blood. But I really see what you mean with the butter. The frosting is a buttercream, right? I think there must be a little of that butter extract in the cake cake part. I might need to try it again to help you out more….. :)

          • I’m so happy you tried it!!! Good to know that there is butter extract in the cake part…I need to make this recipe on January 11 so I look forward to you helping me out!!! Thank you Tracy!

  2. Boy, really enjoying your podcast. Also, I think you guys did SO well re: the person who was going to school & having a hard time. SOLID.

  3. My mind was just blown that it is somehow offensive for someone to be like, “Hmm, what should I wear to the Golden Globes? How about this bad ass dress that I bought with my own money and that I love” What? I have no words.

  4. My very wonderful chiropractor told me that he is used to patients crying, due to the release that is created when the body is adjusted. (Massage therapists recount this experience, too.) He said that as long as someone isn’t crying becuase their pain is so bad, he is not concerned, because it comes with the territory.

  5. One of my goals for the year is to start meditation, so I’m excited to try out Headspace!

Loved this episode, thank you! It’s one of my resolutions to practice more yoga this year and it’s already had such a great effect on my mood. If you can find a chill studio, you might like it, Tracy. I love app recommendations, thanks again!

The secret to the McDonalds cheeseburgers is the diced onions/pickle chips combo. For real, for serious.

    • Tracy Jan 22, 2014

It is!! I’ve found that Snyder’s Honey Mustard pretzels totally taste like mcdonalds cheeseburgers. weird/awesome

  8. Hilary Jan 22, 2014

Loved this episode! Especially loved Michael’s bit! He should come around more often :)

I’m so glad they’re presenting meditation as something accessible and “everyday.” I meditated very intently for several years as a Zen student, but the thing that meditation really gave me was the knowledge that I can relax during stressful times because whatever is stressing me out is temporary (this sucky situation will pass). I have really learned “willpower” or whatever thanks to that. I still have to use it everyday (in traffic, hello?!) but it is an amazing tool for everyday life. I hope other folks are able to use it to learn patience.

I’m a long reader of both your blogs & don’t miss a single podcast, but I rarely comment. I need to comment on this one though regarding your tinnitus Tracy. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this & understand every frustration related to this. I’ve had it for 7 yrs. It started with ringing, which I thought was unbearable at the time. I went to an ENT where they gave me a hearing test which recorded slight hearing loss. A tumor was ruled out after an MRI. I got used to the ringing & it was ok. This past fall it suddenly got much louder. I went back to the ENT, another hearing test & MRI later, I had no tumor & more hearing loss. Since then, the ringing progressed to an added roaring & hearing loss went from mild-moderate in November to sever-profound. At this point it’s truly unbearable & social events are so hard because of not being able to hear well over the noise in my head. There doesn’t seem to be anything to help medically, so I’m turning to alternative medicine. I have a system of high quality vitamins & therapeutic essential oils ordered & on the way, so I’ll let you know if I find anything that works. I’d encourage you to visit an ENT in the meantime however. And research essential oils & tinnitus. It sounds very encouraging. Sorry this post has gone on so long! Crossing fingers that you can get rid of it!

    • Tracy Jan 22, 2014

Thank you so much! My doctor insists that it will go away and she won’t give me a referral to an ENT. TIME TO PUT THE PRESSURE ON!!!

      • Wilma Jan 22, 2014

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. I’ve done sooo much research, & I can tell you what I’ve tried, coping mechanisms, etc.

Loved this podcast for so many reasons. Michael’s input was so great and I just finished watching Kelly McGonigal’s talk – yes all 54 minutes. I think this means Michael and I are tied. Another part I found interesting as a crazy To Do list person (ahem, Tracy + Joy), was that they may not be as reinforcing and helpful as we think (around the 37 min). And apparently I’m doing the opposite (a la George Costanza) of what research suggests to boost my willpower, so I’m going to try these techniques instead. And heck yes to English accent Headspace guy!

  12. Tracy- You’re dry January equivalent is a whole month without an avocado. Which is insane. Much like a whole month without drinking…in my opinion.

  13. Jenna Jan 23, 2014

Great podcast, I was actually just thinking before it came out that it’s been a while since Michael was on it & then he was! I thought your advice to the girl struggling in school was great, hopefully she can give us an update on how she’s going in a bit! I’ve given up coffee/ caffeine (a HUGE deal for me) in January, but only because I’m trying to conceive! Never thought I would be able to quit the coffee (way easier for me to stop drinking) but surprisingly it actually hasn’t been that hard.

  14. Stephanie Jan 23, 2014

Michael, try healthmonth.com for the social media component!

And for the homemade that tastes like box funfetti cake, try the Momofuku Milk Bar recipe http://www.the-baker-chick.com/2012/06/milk-bar-monday-birthday-layer-cake/

And to the girl who wrote in about struggling in school…yes to ALL of those things. Yes to supportive groups, friends, asking family to come, YESSSS to counseling. (I’m a therapist, and having that concentrated time to reflect with someone else can be such a game changer. You’re not alone!)

  15. I hadn’t even thought much about getting back into meditation this year until you guys started talking about it, but wow do I need to! I just finished day 2 of the Headspace Take 10 program and am really enjoying it. For some reason, I tear up as soon as he says it’s ok to let your mind wander toward the end–how weird is that? Thanks for the recommendations!

  16. Shelby Jan 26, 2014

Thanks for sharing the Willpower GoogleTalk! I love it when people share informative and interesting self help-ish videos. In the famous words of Livia Soprano “In the end you die in your own arms.” The Defensive Pessimism was a very interesting concept. Oh, and another thing I have been feeling like The Housewives of Beverly Hills is really losing it’s game. Joyce can go scratch.

  17. lauren Jan 27, 2014

I know exactly what you were talking about, Tracy, when you were talking about the taste of McDonald’s Cheeseburgers! If I get McD’s, it is the breakfast burritos. So bad, but so good. I had to laugh at your comparison to UFC and Bravo…my husband likes both and I just have to laugh at him. Really…we’re buying RHW of NJ/Atlanta episodes on Amazon? Awesome 😉

  18. Marie Jan 28, 2014

I’m loving the Headspace app! I just finished day 2 and I feel so calm and relaxed. I plan to listen to the google talk this week at work. I could use some help with my willpower.

  19. sarahlinnell Jan 29, 2014

Drynuary?? That sounds terrible! I’d only heard of FebFast, which is a fundraising campaign in Australia for the month of February. You pick a fast, typically alcohol, but also other things, and then raise money which will go to programs supporting teenagers and families dealing with alcohol and drug issues. Now THAT is a good reason to give up alcohol for a month…especially the shortest month in the year! 😛 Otherwise, not so much…

I started this year off with the flu, and as a result of that, I haven’t been able to hear out of my right ear since. I listened to this podcast yesterday and completely felt your pain/frustration, Tracy. Once you guys started talking about meditation, I remembered that I have Simply Being on my phone, and decided to give it another shot before bed last night. I ended up being super relaxed and fell asleep quickly (which never happens). I woke up this morning, and my hearing had returned in my right ear! I literally feel like 2014 just started for me today. Best. Day. Ever. I don’t know what kind of podcast voodoo you guys did on me, but keep it up! I hope you get your hearing back soon, because you will feel like a new woman. Happy New Year!
