deb tracy and joy

This week on the Joy the Baker Podcast, we’re shaking it up a bit.  We have a super special guest joining us.

Please help us welcome Deb Perelman, the author and bourbon-drinker behind the Smitten Kitchen blog and The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook.  Deb is so lovely and funny and wonderfully open about her jam song, bourbon intake, and microwave oven.

First things first!  Let’s talk about our Jam Songs.  Jam Songs are the songs we listen to to get pumped and excited!  They’re the songs that make you feel like you can tackle anything.

Joy’s Jam:  Eminem’s Lose Yourself.

Tracy’s Jam:  Far East Movement’s G6. (We don’t even know what a G6 is…. we should probably ask Deb’s toddler Jacob.)

Deb’s Jam:  Vampire Weekend’s Steps.

We have a certain someone in common with Deb and her Manhattan lifestyle.  We happen to have a bartender in common.

Tracy and I had some gin-infused good times after a bowl of ramen when we were in NYC last summer.  Gosh.

This is Troy, our collective bartender.  He is patient, generous with the gin, and has nice arms.

We have to talk about Spring!  It’s happening right before out eyes!  It’s maxi dress season!!  Let’s stock up!

Tracy got this dress at Old Navy and is OBSESSED.

Thank you for joining us for you 90th episode of the podcast!  We love that you’re here!

We really enjoyed your emailed questions from last week, but because of our special guest, we couldn’t get to as many questions as we normally do.  More next week, to be sure!

  1. I’ve been wondering what a G6 is for ages. I think its a car?? Also, Eminem’s lose yourself is one of those songs that every secretly knows all the words to but doesn’t want to admit it. It’s pretty awesome. I love it!

Hahaa, club tunes. She left out an important word “fly” – fly like a G6, it’s a jet. “Now I’m feelin’ so fly like a G6, like a G6.” LOL

  3. Tracy, I got that dress about a month ago and wore it for the first time last Saturday! I also wore it Sunday and Monday. (Don’t judge me). I wore it with leggings and boots. I wore it with red ballet flats. I wore it with a long cardigan and scarf. I wore it with a denim jacket. I love it.

  4. 1) I think I have the best nervous affliction. When I’m nervous I yawn.

    2) I am waiting for someone to cover Rihanna’s stay whose voice doesn’t make me cringe.

    3) You can do a white tie-dye with bleach. My friends and I did this to jeans in high school, We looked ridiculous dressing up for an NSYNC concert, but the bleach worked GREAT. You just put rubber bands where you want the swirls or bullseyes or wherever, and, throw the dress in solo and then run the wash with bleach. Easy peasy.

That’s all for my list-format comment party.

  5. Oh Wow!!! This podcast!!!! My three favorite bloggers together!!!! I’ve just had a celebrity moment as if I’ve just bumped into the three of you… If I’m ever lucky enough to be able to meet the three of you I promise that I won’t hug you… Deb, I have a thing for margaritas. I say that I will only have the one and end up having three…at least….
FYI I think the phone memos are a great idea and I do it with my friend too and we live 15 minutes from each other!!!!

  6. Great episode, and Joy, you are NOT alone in your appreciation of a good arm! That was one of the very first things I noticed about my husband. (and also maybe why I used to like drummers so much…)

  7. uuuuuhhhhh i totally hugged deb when i met her in toronto!

  8. i love deb’s voice! this was such a rockstar of a podcast!

  9. Three of my maj fave bloghers! Great podcast as always.
Tracy I also have the same squeezing compulsion (can’t stop won’t stop) and died laughing at your advise about the cheating ex.

  10. So, I totally drove past the venue Deb was in when she visited Minneapolis…and in fact, I only live about 7 minutes away from it, but I couldn’t go…so this podcast was a nice consolation round for me! Love it!

And I’m totally with Deb on the sister meeting with the cheater debacle. I say, meet with him, and tell him exactly what you think of him and how you don’t think he deserves your sister anymore. Especially if other members of your family are feeling kind of soft towards him, he needs to know that you’ve got your sister eyes on his cheater self.

Background: My sister’s husband cheated on her and has pretty much been a total jerk about everything ever since, their divorce, custody, etc….my family doesn’t really have contact with him anymore, but there are days I literally daydream about meeting with him and his (10-years-younger!) home-wrecker and telling them what’s up.

Love the podcast, love all three bloggers present!

For thd record, since epi 89, a friend and I have daily exchanged voice memos and we love it! Thank you for the great idea to help long-distance friends feel close together again!

  12. I am over the moon about this episode because it has all of my favorite bloggers ever combined, which =’s heaven! I met both Joy (in NYC) and Deb (in Boston) on their respective book tours…and when Deb signed my Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer it made me happier then ever! (Link attached, because, of course I had to blog about it. I am not a stalker – just a huge HUGE fan). Joy – on your next book tour I will bring the same mixer for you to sign as well :) Thank you, thank you, thank you ladies for making this happen! You made my week.

Tracy, Dave Chapelle did the Eminem parody you mentioned:

my husband and I reference it every time we have spaghetti. 😉

AHHH! That’s IT!!! Thank you for finding this for me. It’s ALWAYS in my head. xo

  14. G6 is short for the Gulfstream G650, a big ol’ private jet that costs about $58 million. You could say I’m up on my expensive airplane knowledge (False. I looked it up).

  15. Tracy, I weirdly enjoy the way you pronounce accessorize. lol

Great podcast ladies! Loved the advice given!

  16. Enjoyed the laughs. Thank you. I also have to add that lately Target has had some cute sping clothing for a gal on a budget. I have to say I do enjoy a splurge and am planning an Anthro trip next week. And thank you now I have Deb’s pump up song stuck in my head. Seriously stuck! Have a great week.

    Hey Ladies,
I love, love, love your podcast!! Tracy, I saw this dress on piperlime and thought of your comment about a tiedyed maxi.

Can’t wait for the next episode!

The blog 1000 Awesome Things is doing a rerun of the 1000 things they posted, and today’s was titled “People you don’t clean up for when they visit.” Gotta appreciate those friends that love you for who you are, messes and all!

DEB! My family makes that cake like mad! I ate it twice over Easter weekend…we call it beinenstich … here is a link to a trusted recipe I can get you my aunts recipe if you would like! She makes the best I have ever had :) Great podcast ladies!!!

  20. Let’s stop all those voice memo haters out there! I sent my first one and my friend loved my “soliloquy,” her word, not mine. Now I send them all the time. It’s a fantastic and easy way to get all your thoughts out when you know the other person is busy and you don’t want to bother them with a phone call and it’s a great alternative to the drunk phone call…

I would like to second the comment above. My best friend and I (both avid podcast listeners) started the voice memos at your suggestion. We live about three hours apart and have found it to be a great way to keep in touch while still being able to stay on top of our busy schedules. Plus, for some reason, you hand a girl a microphone and a lot of funny stuff comes out :)

  22. I cannot imagine anyone complaining about voice memos! You ladies changed the way I communicate with my BFF! Awesome podcast!

  23. Rebecca in STL Apr 9, 2013

I love the story about Deb and the Louisville bourbon hangover! As a native Kentuckian, I reiterate, you guys REALLY should do the Kentucky bourbon trail and blog/podcast about it. My former roommate was a bourbon lobbyist (yes, bourbon has lobbyists) and I’m sure she could get you hooked-up to meet a few of the distillers!

  24. I totally loved everything about this episode. Deb was a natural and I hope you have her on at least twenty more times.

  25. Mira C Apr 12, 2013

I toooootally have a thing for arms. And a good butt – I’m a squeezer too, Tracy! (Only of my man’s behind, mind you, I’m not going around squeezing random tushes.)

When I’m nervous, especially if I’m having a really tense conversation, I get really smiley. It’s awkward, since it seems like I’m not taking things seriously.

I loved hearing Deb! She is lovely, and has a wonderful speaking voice.

  26. Claire Apr 13, 2013

Joy, where did you get that dress with feathers on it?

  27. This is definitely one of my favorite episodes. Deb is hilarious! I don’t follow her blog, but maybe I’ll have to start!
I LOVE the idea of voice memos! I would totally do it if my best girl friends had iPhones. They don’t, so that’s lame. Genius idea though, ladies.

Thanks for bringing 50 minutes of sunshine into my boring work week!

  28. Looove this podcast ! Love these women, inspiring, hilarious, plain coool !
